Hi this is Everitt a.k.a Aztec Warrior 1968 and it’s great to be back for 2011 Summer School enrolled in FTVMS 212/ 328: Video Games - Theory and Culture. As Film, TV and Media is one of my Majors (along with Anthropology) I took this course because it was the only FTVMS Stage II/ III course available during Summer School and it sounded really interesting.
The first lecture was an interesting one as questions were asked of students as to who were gamers and those who play video games. For example, at the first lecture on Thursday Kevin asked for a show of hands as to ‘who considered themselves gamers?’ Kevin then followed it with ‘How many of you play video games? Aaah! interesting. Well, up to that point I could not 100% guarantee if I knew the difference between a gamer: a person whom I presume plays games online with other gamers, and a person who plays video games: either on consoles i.e. PC, PSP, Xbox, PS3 and/ or play games at Arcade Parlours etc. I think that’s why I put my hand up as a gamer but I actually play video games down at the local arcade and sometimes online.
Now if I could touch on Massive Multi Online Player Games (MMOPG’s), readings and tutorial. It might sound strange but before starting this course I did not know what the abbreviation MMOPG’s stood for. I have played online games such as Counter Strike with friends and other online players in the past but had never heard the term mentioned either in shape or form. But after covering most of the Perron and Wolf and Consalvo and Dutton readings I saw the abbreviation again and it was relayed again back to me and the other students during the tutorial by Kevin on Friday. The tutorial was a shortened one since there were only two readings to cover and that wrapped up a very interesting week and looking forward to more in the comings week.
Cheers
