I read a person’s blog that interested me which stated that the narratives of games like street fighter and Tekken were unsuccessful in making money.
However, if film directors use these different approaches suggested by an individual in our class in my opinion game films will always be critized no matter what approach is taken. The two methods that this individual thought of are, letting the game companies do it themselves and secondly outsource the fans. I disagreed with what they had to say, because even though such approaches are used to make a game into a successful film or an unsuccessful film. It will be critized no matter what and the fans that have played the game will have their own opinion of what happened because they have engaged with the game themselves. However the first approach is good as the company kind of does create the story when you choose a character. In Tekken a game I played while in high school every time you clock all the stages at the end there's always a story of what happened to them. This makes perfect sense to the gamer and when film directors try and change the storyline even though it is closely related. The outcome of the film is never successful. But this is my opinion. Narrative of such games should be thought out carefully so people who are fans of the game society or the film society do not cross paths.
In stating my opinion on video games and their narratives I have developed an understanding slowly throughout this summer semester about narratives of games as films. Narrative theory can be broken up into two sections labeled “story” and “discourse”. Story refers to the actual chronology of events in the narrative and the discourse refers to manipulation of that story. After realizing the conception of narrative in Kevin’s lecture I came to my senses that although film makers do not get enough money due to the poor making of games into a film. There is no need for the remake of gaming films as the game makers have done their part on games as games develop to the next level.
