Immersion n Stuff

To be honest, before the Thursday lecture I really didn’t even notice how effective immersion was in game play. I never realised how every detail, like all media, all contributed to the overall authenticity of the game (albeit a game in which I’m killing zombies or aliens). The intricate detail of settings, characters and weapons, the creativity of storylines and inclusion of narration giving an immediate perspective, realistic sound effects and so much more – all these details I had accepted due to immediacy without question. I have genuinely generated a respect for what must be a terrifically hard job in not only creating and producing a video game, but producing a kick ass one at that. The layers of complexity that must go into the thought processes when creating a game are no longer unappreciated by myself.
Although, whilst bearing this in mind I do hope that it does not stop the diegetic immersion of my game play; the last thing I want is to be playing a great game and be thinking “oh look at the detail in this person’s blood splattered face, the work that must have gone into producing the quality sound effects of the gun I am now using to kill random zombie #17”. It is my dire hope that whilst appreciating the game I am playing, my new respect will not cause the immediacy to turn into hypermediacy by the very fact that I am now aware of such details.
