Games don’t kill everyone

From one side game makers can look like they are evil people trying to suck in gamers and ruin their lives jus to make a profit. In their games they aim for immersion, creating a world where players can really get involved and basically start alternate lives, and what looks like addiction. In this respect I can see where worried non-gamers come from with their fears about people becoming anti social and even violent. And I always just thought that it was fair enough that game makers do this, I mean everyone’s trying to make a profit, and I just saw it as the consumer’s responsibility to stop themselves from falling prey to what the game makers want, ultimately for you to get lost in their games and lose all connection with the real world. However in the last lecture especially some things that were said really changed my perspective in this respect. Just the fact that game makers put little reminders in some games that tell you if you’ve been playing too long told me that they don’t want you to play yourself to death, they just want you to have a good time. I think what some anti-game enthusiasts forget is that games are fun. They are not just an almost fatal addiction that is controlling all young people’s minds. They are fun things that people choose to be a part of to get a little fantasy into their lives. The same way someone would read a book or watch a film. They can be ways to escape from the real world, but not in a bad way. If you don’t focus on the extreme cases of nutters who play for days on end without eating and kill themselves. Instead think of the people who can play games. Even for what some would class as an excessive amount of time, and can enjoy them as they are intended to be enjoyed, gamers who can still feed and bath themselves , it becomes a lot clearer that games are intended as a hobby not a cult that will destroy a whole generation of young minds.
