Wikipedia:
“A griefer is a player who does things in a game to deliberately cause annoyance ("grief" in the sense of "giving someone grief") for the griefer's own enjoyment (or "lulz"). Such a player is a particular nuisance in online gaming communities, since griefers often cannot be deterred by penalties related to in-game goals.”
Having never heard that term before, I was really interested in its existence. I can’t say Im not surprised. As gaming culture has matured and becoming more reflective of society, it is only reflective that there are going to be members who (like in real-life) are there to irritate. Greifer’s are going to be the online equivalent of those who through eggs at your house or spray graffiti around the neighborhood. I suppose the prevalence of grifers in MMO’s is due to the anonymity the players can hide behind, and ofcoarse the lack of consequence.
