It seems from the lecture that online gaming involves tolerating some amount of rudeness, vulgarity, poor sportsmanship, and bad manners and you can generally expect this sort of misbehaviour in just about every multiplayer game you come across. The fact that people are largely anonymous online coupled with their getting very emotionally involved in the competition, means they throw out any semblance of politeness or decency. Here are a few things about gaming etiquette which I think are important.
Be A Good Sport
Laughing at defeated opponents, bragging about your achievements, overdoing it with taunts and emotes, are things which happen often. An appropriate gesture used at the right moment can be a beautiful thing, for example, if you have been involved in a fraught battle with an opponent on halo, and he kills you, he might ‘tea-bag’ you, which involves pressing the crouch button over your dead corpse. You get the idea of what this mimics and at the right time this can be funny, like friendly banter. Overuse however is just arrogance.
Don't Spam
You really don't need to shout over the chat system, swear or make stupid noises. We all know what it sounds like when you put the microphone in your mouth and yell into it. People aren't interested in other games repeating the same message every five seconds until you get a response shows how sadly you lack human contact in your grandmas basement
We were all Noob’s once.
Seeing how complicated games are these days means that nobody picks up a new game and instantly knows all of the details, many old hack players constantly learn new things. With the sheer amount of acronyms and slang particular to each game it's absurd to expect people to know these things without a little help from other players.
A Little Teamwork, Please
If you're part of a team, try to cooperate with your teammates a little. Rambo-style gameplay rarely pays off in a team-oriented game, so don't expect your teammates to be right behind you when you go kamakazi into a gauntlet of enemies. Also keep in mind that actually winning the match is more important than being at the top of the scoreboard.
Not Everyone Who Wins Is a Cheater
Some people seem to think that just because another player kills them a couple times that they're cheating. There are bound to be players who are just as good or better than you are. LAN tournaments are available where there is no way to cheat, and Griefing comes in here, however rather than cheating, its more unique use of the existing software and really belongs under fair play.
Camping Is a Lame Tactic
Camping spawn points and dead bodies, hidden doors and side rooms is considered a lame tactics by most game players. Many believe there is no honour in this type of game play; others will argue that the stats speak for themselves…
