FPS and Narrative

As I was sitting in Thursday lecture about narrative I couldn't stop thinking about how it related to first person shooters. Now in first person shooters you don't make choices, everything is planned out, sure the way you deal with a certain group of enemies might be different but everyone's narrative experience will be the same.

This begs the question then, are players navigating the database or are first person shooters somehow a different type of narrative?

Saying this first person shooters have some of the most detailed and involved story lines. For example the halo series is one of the most expansive universes in games today with multiple planets, universes, races and religions all with their own back story. Sure this fiction and narrative is supplemented with books etc. but the first three games all added together equals one epic story that is complicated and sometimes hard to understand.

But the question still remains whether the lack of decision making means that first person shooters narratives are disadvantaged?
