Hello,
I wanted to talk about girls that play games. I have always had the same impression as a lot of people that girls don't really play games, or at least they aren't super serious about their games. I was surprised when I heard that apparently 40 percent of American gamers are female. In my experience, everybody that I know who plays games are male. Therefore, my first thought when I heard about such a large group of girls playing games, was that game designers are clearly not very good at marketing, and that they are missing out on a relatively large potential market.
Why is it that there are so few games that are aimed at a female audience, or at least games aimed equally at both men and women? It seems like poor planning, and it seems like a missed opportunity for gaming companies, because any game targeted at a female audience would surely be bought by the vast majority of female gamers.
The way that I see it, there are so few games that are truly made for a female audience because, even in the gaming industry, people see the female gamers market as very small. This could be due to females not admitting so openly in games that they are females, portrayals of gamers in the media as largely male, or a large proportion of game designers being male, so they create games that they, themselves would like to play.
Whatever the reason for such a shortage of games that appeal to a female audience, without having females as overly exaggerated sexual beings, I think that games companies seriously need to concider making games for the ladies. Not only for monetary reasons, but also to satisfy what seems to be a large audience that most people aren't aware of.
